The Pasture, Rangeland, Forage Rainfall Index program (PRF-RI) is based on weather data collected and maintained by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center for 58 years. The index reflects how much precipitation is received relative to the long-term average for a specified area and timeframe of two month intervals.
Coverage is based on the rainfall experience in a small area called a grid. Under the PRF Rain Index grids are squares of 12 x 12 miles. The smaller area allows PRF policies to provide more localized, specific coverage.
Crops available are Hayland (including perennial; Bermuda and alfalfa, etc) and Native Grazing. Crop(s) must be planted by July 1st of the prior year to be eligible, over seeding is allowed.
Insured must select a minimum of two index intervals (coverage period) during the crop year for each Crop Type and Grid ID. Two intervals are required per crop.

Insurer may select one coverage level of insurance per crop type in the county; coverage levels are 70, 75, 80, 85, or 90 percent. Insurer than selects a productivity factor which is a percent a producer selects that allows him/her to individualize coverage “valuing” his/her crop. The productivity factor allows a producer to increase the protection per acre on that producer’s insured hayland or grazing. Factors can be between 60 and 150 percent, 1% increments.
