The Pasture, Rangeland, Forage Vegetation Index program (PRF-VI) uses 2 out of 5 NASA satellites to determine the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The NDVI measures and monitors the plant growth, and the vegetation which allows both satellites to show the chlorophyll levels through infrared light. This technology will benefit the rancher in assessing his/her specific land needs.
Crops available for coverage are Hayland (including perennial; Bermuda and alfalfa, etc) and Native Grazing. Crop(s) must be planted by July 1st of the prior year to be eligible, over seeding is allowed.
Insured may select one or more index intervals (coverage period) during the crop year for each Crop Type and Grid ID. Only one interval is required.

Coverage is based on the vegetation density experience broke down in 4.8 x 4.8 mile grid squares under the PRF- Vegetation policy. The plan is based on grid “greenness” data from EROS and not on individual. This allows the insurer to pick specific grid (s) that have the greatest impact on their operation.
Insurer may select only one coverage level of insurance per crop type in the county; coverage levels are 70, 75, 80, 85, or 90 percent. Insurer than selects a productivity factor which is a percent a producer selects that allows him/her to individualize coverage “valuing” his/her crop. The productivity factor allows a producer to increase the protection per acre on that producer’s insured hayland or grazing. Factors can be between 60 and 150 percent, 1% increments.
